Feral Poem by Holly Jamestone

Feral

More alone than I
Lying amongst the flower stems
Partaking of the shade
And carefree as a cat

I named her BlackJack
Until her kittens arrived one by one
The following spring and she
Then simply became Jackie

I believe she forgave me
For taking those kittens from her
And giving them a life
She could never tolerate or comprehend

She greeted me each day
Her eyes locking on mine with
Her subtle tail wag that her
Feral genes might not approve of

Always in my heart, as I reminisce
Of the way she peacefully made her way
In her dignified garden world
Aware of only her own horizon

If only I could one day lounge
Amongst the lush green stalks
In the cool, shady paradise of Jackie's world
Carefree as my kitty was

Her passing leaves me grateful for the time
That was ours and dreaming of how
It could or should have been for one
More alone than I

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
He was a stray cat living beneath my front porch. I named him BlackJack until he had a litter of kittens and I changed his name to Jackie. I knew nothing about cats but quickly learned. I bottlefed the litter, domesticated them, had them all spayed and neutered and adopted into good homes. Their mother, Jackie, was with me for nine years. Though I could never domesticate her, she greeted me in the driveway each day, keeping her distance, as I prepared her food. She enjoyed the outdoor home I provided her that had a skylight and was up against the southern exposure brick so that she was never cold. In her own way, I know she loved me. I loved her till the day she went to Heaven. That day was the closest I was able to get to this precious feline, finally petting her for the first time. -hollyJ
