Finding Myself Poem by Karen Miller

Finding Myself

She flinches as the hand comes down
To meet her face
This is what she is used to
Then it's the blood she tastes

Every day every hour
She waits for it to come again
Can't escape or get away
How she now hates all men

This world is screwed up
That is all that's on her mind
She wants to feel nothing now
Dead ends is all she finds

He dominates her life
And tells her what to doe
Feeling depressed all the time
She wants it all to be through

She doesn't know where to turn
To make it go away
Unsure what to do
I guess here is where she'll stay

Starting to get worse
All the time she fades away
Not wanting to be in the real world
Numb is what she wants to stay

She has nowhere to go
She can't run away or stay
She wants to just die today
That is where she'll be okay

She tries to kill herself
But something goes a rye
Now she has more strength this time
And doesn't want to die

She starts fighting back
The pain is still the same as before
Knowing she's worth more than this
Gets her stuff and walks right out the door

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Sometimes it takes falling down to the bottom to realize you have the strength to pick yourself up and move on in life as I did after 11 years in an abusive relationship.

Good for you for leaving, Karen. It takes an extremely courageous and strong person to reclaim her life.
