First Australians Poem by Francis Duggan

First Australians

Rating: 5.0

Their bones are in unmarked graves beneath the earth and sand
But their spirits are still living in their great Southern Land
Their descendants a dwindling minority and it does seem sad to say
That they are ruled by others in the Australia of today
In the shadows of the tall gums out of the warm sun and the breeze
They had their celebrations and danced their corroborees
They lived solely off of Nature and what they killled they did eat
Their diet was of fruit and berries and fish as well as meat
They did not mine for uranium or gold, explore for oil or mine for coal
The twenty first century human exploitation of Nature for wealth is greed out of control
To Nature they were a good friend and we are Nature's foe
The first caretakers of this Southern Land many centuries ago
They will always be the first Australians and Australia's only Indigenous Race
And their descendants in Australia should command the highest place.
