Treasure Island

Jon Treloar

Fish

Glimmer of Blue
A Flash of Silver
Something approaches that I dread

Perfectly still
Never Breathing
As it passes overhead

Forever Prowling
Hunger growling
On my flesh to be fed

A Flash, a glimmer
An Awful shimmer
I fly from the seabed

From standing start
I dash, I dart
Heart pounding in my head

Just behind me
Flying desperately
Soon I will be dead

Gaping, Yawning
Blue Eternity
A smear of fading red

You think a god
would protect you more
if you were me instead?

Life is chance
An emotional dance
Life in every death

Poem of the Day

poet Paul Laurence Dunbar

The mist has left the greening plain,
The dew-drops shine like fairy rain,
The coquette rose awakes again
Her lovely self adorning.
