Fishers' Anthem

As I ride on my log
I call it sport to plough with the oar
in search of spots with large returns
till the breeze matures to a storm
and throws me into the deep
to float like a wrecked raft
to be fished out by fellow fishers
to be laid on the bank
like the shivering gulls
which squat on rocks
and wait on the sun as upon God
to make their chilly bodies warm.
I ride on giant gourds
like the happy Argungu players
to abduct the ambitious fins
which strive to reach the peak of their watery realm.
I outstay the sun, which like a prodigal
lavishes its blazing fire
on the flirtatious day
to retire later in a menial orange flame.
Let the world save its tears when someday
it finds beneath the morning lighted sea
dry bones bleached to precious pebbles.
