For My Sister Poem by Salleh Chowdhury

For My Sister

I love the woman who refuses to be your slave,
who refuses your definitions of beauty and only bows down when she prays,
I love the woman who is modest at heart, who says this body is not for your eyes, but for the sake of God,
She's educated and bright without a sense of pride,
Sure she's insecure, but she'll be damned if you see it,
Innocent and immature but cross her and her wrath, you'll feel it,
They say they want to liberate her, which is funny to me,
Because she's free-er than them, hell she's free-er then me,
She's at a place where we can only aspire to be,
She's at peace, and if that's oppression then chain me up and take me!
Do not underestimate her, she has a beautiful mind,
she is fearless, she has the Lord by her side,
strong willed, determined yet so soft, so kind,
I love the woman, whose father says Alhamdulilah, i'm so fortunate to have a daughter like mine?
her love shines through, but shes careful to share it with only a select few,
beauty as pure as the woman she came from,
stature so small thats it's hard to believe she can be so strong
I love the woman who refuses to be your slave,
who refuses your definitions of beauty and only bows down when she prays,
I love the woman who puts a smile on your face,
silences a room with her sophosticated grace, and expresses love to her sisters with a warm embrace,
She is free, she is in command of her mind and beauty, she portrays seemingly effortless dignity
she is the embodiment of faith, no one controls what she thinks or says,
that's why I love the woman who refuses to be your slave,
so Who exactly are you trying to liberate?
to me it sounds obsurd, her spirit is away with the birds.
