For Too Long: We Shall Overcome Poem by Hebert Logerie

For Too Long: We Shall Overcome

For too long
We’ve been humming
And singing
This song
We shall overcome
It’s humiliating
That we still can’t become
First class citizen
So we can reach heaven
Without trial and tribulation
So we can stop all sorts of humiliation
Racism and discrimination.

For too long
This song
Has been with us throughout the struggle
And whenever we’re confronting trouble
We shall overcome
We will overcome
We shall overcome today
Not tomorrow, not one day
We must improve the system
Change the status quo and its emblem
With the help of the Almighty
We’ve overcome the ignominy
We’re humming His Glory
From sunrise to sunset
This is the end; this is it.
