Four Small Poems Poem by Ananta Madhavan

Four Small Poems

1.

The rapids of history leave us breathless as they happen.
If we are long-lived, they will rush by again in the future.

2.
Patience is a virtue enforced on a person who has
No other way. We end up by tolerating what we cannot
Prevent or overcome.
3.

A devotee ritually repeats a verse,
"The Thousand Names of Lord Vishnu",
Sustainer of all Creation.

But worshipping, he adds in a whisper,
"Thou, of a Thousand Names,
Art to me unnamable".

4.

Time is our construct, our idiom shows
The difference between two questions,
"What‘s the time like? "
And "What is Time? "

We are Jesting Pilates. We arrest our Time
By wrist watch and chronometer,
But it is Time that has arrested us, although
Shakespeare has Hotspur saying,
"Time must have a stop."
