Midnights Voice

(November 3,1950 / Selma, Alabama)

Future Past Perfect

She was a dream without an ending
I worked every Christmas and New Year's day
The piano needed tuning
And everyone knew what I could not say

So I retired and took my pension
Not before I moved away
The sky's been awful foreboding
Cut and dried my wildlife display

Now I write poetry on a web site
The dictionary is my Bible
And when my inspiration hits me
Then come see me and all my drivel

can't anybody see
can't anybody be
Monday was just a new year's evening
Tuesday's just another day

oh, yeah!

So I wrote another poetry
But the rain began to fall
And all the Queen's men and all their horses
Stood around Humpty D. and all they did was stall

Now I wish you a happy birthday
Even if it's five months away
You can have your cake and I will eat it
Seems that all is in disarray

And all the roses are well past frozen
The sun has now refused to shine
And all the stars are just some memory
I have my bottle of foreign wine

So take me to the railway station
You say it doesn't stop here anymore
So if I take a boat to China
Will I find you waiting at the door

can't anybody see
can't anybody be
Monday was just a new year's evening
Tuesday's just another day

oh, yeah!

Three times I had the lust to kill,
To clutch a throat so young and fair,
And squeeze with all my might until
No breath of being lingered there.
Three times I drove the demon out,
