Girl 2 Poem by Paul Butters

Girl 2

(Written 30\7\71, Rev 19\12\71)

Girl slumbers, clothed in sun:
Flyless Venus-Flytrap,
Void of motion, thought or action,
Still-life image,
Lake of oil lays waiting for a flame to come.

Her head, factory of outworn thoughts,
Churns patterns of the past…

(Wr.11\11\72 :)
The day she started at the office,
Fresh, young and apprehensive
Midst the clanging gunfights of typewriter ranks
And the knowing eyes of men.

Her first encounter,
In a stockroom,
At the Christmas party:
Hapless love made through the swirls of drink.
Smiling without care…
