Gladys Aylward Poem by Francis Duggan

Gladys Aylward

Physically she was a tiny woman but in life she made her own history
And in China she did more than anyone did to alleviate the scourge of poverty
The decades go by but she is still remembered and history it always will recall
That Gladys Aylward the great humanitarian was one of the greatest missionaries of all.

A tiny English woman with a huge heart her type of person one might say quite rare
Her life devoted to the poor and needy she took in homeless children in her care
In China she was known as Ai weh deh when translated it means the virtuous one
She helped the poor, the hungry and downtrodden and she's still remembered for the good she done.

In a World where money brings to people status the Gladys Aylwards one might say too rare
And though there are still people who devote their lives to humanitarian causes the broken lives are hard lives to repair
The men of war they cause a lot of damage one misplaced bomb can create a million refugees
They flee their war torn Lands in search of shelter and in unsafe boats they cross the treacherous seas.

Lets celebrate the marvellous Gladys Aylward in her there was a huge amount of good
In her fight against poverty and homelessness and hunger she did as much as anybody could
Her story often told and her fame is still living thousands of miles from her own Homeland shore
And though the Ai weh dehs of this World not many their names will surely live forever more.
