Grandmother Poem by Theresa Ann Moore

Grandmother

Grandmother, your photo has nothing to say.
It is glossy black and white with shades of gray.
Your image has knowing eyes that are now blind.
You swore never to reveal untold truths that bind.

Your secrets and sources remained hidden.
Undisclosed information that is not forgiven.
A fine reputation was shielded from disgrace.
A nameless father was thrown in your daughter’s face.

As a loving mother you kept her close by your side.
Because of your wishes she remained and complied.
As a growing child she was sheltered and cared for.
Abandoned by a caring father who chose to ignore.

As your granddaughter, I find myself wondering why.
Mother felt less than whole; you let her self-esteem die.
What was the reason for not telling her a father’s name?
I have inherited your silence and my mother’s blame.
