carmen o dear carmen,
ad astra the wanderer
across those nights she sent
a gleaming lust than ever.

never a lover carmen,
i write to my forgotten
she who deceived a friend
a dearest friend now in heaven.

unforgiven carmen,
your sins frighten the gods
a wretch knows no amends
a foul stain as your end

yet so tragic my carmen,
your sullied guilt unwashed
your yearned freedom abandoned
and for that i am rueful.

ah, carmen!
