Head Down Poem by Dean Meredith

Head Down

Don’t be ashamed, he said
Trying to get my attention
Sure, my head was down
Avoiding his eyes
For various reasons
He seemed a keen observer, of people
Sitting, as he did each day
Outside the shops
Scabbing a few coins
And the occasional note
Yeah, he had me picked alright
Head down, walking on by
No luck with me that day
I was too hurt
To do anything except
Put one foot in front of another
Head down and press on
Maybe I’d catch him again
Sometime on the flipside
But not that day
I kept on walking
Without a word
Head down
