Hearing Things Poem by Raj Arumugam

Hearing Things

1
when first I heard the radio
when I was just about four
in a tiny village in India
I thought I was hearing things
but mom said:

2
when first I heard
the voice on the other side of the line
I nearly jumped out of my skin
but the salesperson said:
Don’t worry;
that’s not the devil
that’s just the marvel of the telephone

3
when now I hear voices
when I’m in my shower
and I ask my wife and children:
Did you guys want to talk to me?
they answer:
Why would we?
You’d better wash your ears;
You’re hearing things…
