Heart Is A Strange Thing Poem by Arta Krasniqi

Heart Is A Strange Thing

Rating: 5.0

You cannot
Teach heart
How to love
Or how much to give
You can never
Tame it
Quite enough to know
Its boundaries
Its mysterious ways
Still amaze me
Still lead me
To the strangest roads...

There is a quiet confidence expressed in your poem that we can understand at least part of our emotional lives. That is, the heart communicates its needs and desires. But I sense there is a larger mystery surrounding our limited knowledge. Am I reading too much into the poem?

This is a poem of utmost sensitivity. Many poets past and present have addressed the issue of the Heart and your poem adds something personal to that essential writing. Your theme is that the heart is boundless, and if you are truly committed to heart-issues, your personal being will become boundless in its good will. Beethoven wrote an impossibly beautiful slow movement for his 15th String Quartet: he wrote on the score - WITH GRATITUDE FOR RESTORED HEALTH, FROM MY HEART TO YOUR HEART. This and your other poems make that heart journey!

You have a marvelous command of the common vocabulary of English, which is what poets aspire to master in the modern age. One of the leading contemporary American Poets, Robert Bly, who just turned 89, lives in my state, Minnesota. In his long and productive career he has only chosen common words and released their uncommon power and meaning - as you do in this poem. You trust the words STRANGE, TAME, MYSTERIOUS, AMAZE to carry your meaning, and they do (!) straight into the reader's heart which welcomes them. Because this is not a poem in which minds are arguing and scoring points. It is a poem of sympathy between you and the reader, in which truths that are immediately persuasive are shared and internalized, and the common ground they stand on widens. These are the emotions which bind people into a community. Common words spoken by people of good will - that's as close to paradise as we can get on earth!
