Heartbeat Poem by Nina Dringo

Heartbeat

What is a heartbeat
But a delicate thrumming of life beneath one's fingertips
A fragile thing, like a butterfly
Dancing through the sky.

What is a song
But an interconnected web of notes
How randomly beautiful, and yet
How deliberately, carefully placed.

What is a sky
But an open world above us
So close, so blue
An airy ocean floating over us.

What is a gaze
But a silent 'I know you'
A silent 'I love you'
A silent smile.

What is a smile
But a happy thought frozen
A ghost of a laugh
Silent but so overpoweringly loud.

What is love
But a bond between people
Can't be touched, or proven
But there all the same.

What is a life
But a meaningless consequence of the universe
But define life...
It may be random
But it's anything but meaningless.
