Heartbeats For Japan Poem by Elizabeth Padillo Olesen

Heartbeats For Japan

What words to say
What verses to write
when watching the earthquake
and tsunami, casting their fury
over the House of the Rising Sun?

Who can measure fear
when watching death
before one's eyes?
Who can measure tears
shed upon those who die?

Who can bring back
lives and treasures
long time laboured
which simply disappear
at a wink of an eye?

Fragile humans are we
who by nature's fury
are like crumpled papers
and floating debris
on the earth's open sea.

Thanks, dear poet, for your comment which is very encouraging. The great calamity which hit Japan last year left us to grasp the philosophical realities in life. We do hope that Japan has now managed to be relieved from that unspeakable tragedy.

Elizabeth, your use of methaphors are unparalled. This poem brings to fore the vagaries of mankind not only in Japan but other parts of the world. You have a special ways of using questions to drive home your message. Another strong point is always the last part of your poems, very philosophical. Keep scribling.
