Her Collateral Damage Poem by Ken Duffy

Her Collateral Damage

When at my most vulnerable
Was when she chose to strike
Pocking at sores I thought hidden
Infecting them with a wicket tongue

People thought I was the strong one
But mine, was a false image
A carefully built suit of amour
Built as protection, from old wounds

I trusted, and my trust was laid bare
By one who knew me best
Familiar, with what would hurt me most
Enjoying the hurt, her verbal abuse brought

I tried hard to be her strength
A rock on which she could stand
But she betrayed who I was
Her abuse, has used up all my strenght

Where now that person I once knew
Falling in love at first sight
She, now kidnapped by petty bitterness
Happy days, are just relics from my past

Never was I her enemy
I just got caught in her crossfire
A victim of her war of madness
Me, I was her collateral damage
