Her Pegasus Poem by Nina Bej

Her Pegasus

Said the man with the romance of thought in his eye
And the softest shimmer of a whispered sigh:
Get closer, love, count the stars in the sky
You can be an angel if you're willing to fly.

Said the girl in which the strongest hope sings
Like the sound of a birdsong lost in the wind:
Come closer to me; to you I must cling.
I can be an angel if you are my wings.

Cautioned the man whose heart began
To fall like the crest of a wave upon sand:
I will lead you until you can let loose my hand;
Then you must choose a path from Life's unmapped land.

Replied she whose personality
Consisted simply of timidity:
We shape our lives like the moon shapes the sea;
But tempests accompany placidity.

Argued he who embraced the impossible,
He who considered fear to be optional:
We must not be afraid of the plausible
Or our ambitions will never be audible.

Responded the girl who failed to protest
Because of her tendency to second-guess:
My ambitions, though true of heart, I have oppressed;
I fear they're far greater than I first assessed.

Answered the man who pitied her not,
Who treasured her less than the dreams that he sought:
Your dreams will dissolve if for them you've not fought—
Your aspirations will all come to naught.
I advise you today to take all I have taught
And utilize it to make action from thought.

Whispered the girl who strove to be brave,
Trying to show him she need not be saved:
Although I can't promise you a complete change,
Darling, I'll accept all that you gave.
But please mend the heart I self-hatefully staved,
The heart upon which your name is engraved.

Asserted the man who with her was finished,
The man who was done with his games and his gimmicks:
Your heart belongs to me not one more minute;
I return it so you may explore all within it.
Rediscover the heart you diminished.
Please let me know when you find the wings in it.
