Hero Poem by anna newman

Hero

They kept telling me he wouldn’t hurt me
That my dream man would always be good to me
He would be handsome and he would be tall
He would be the one to do never do any wrong
He’d hold my hand and stroke my hair
And he’d be willing when I needed someone there.

They told me everything, tried for no lies
They even informed me of his torturing eyes
They said I’d love him, that he might love me
Told it as if it was a made up story
They made it sound perfect, but they told a white lie
They didn’t mention that he would make me cry.

Nothing was said about how much it would hurt
When this made out hero threw a harsh word
They kept quiet about all the sleepless nights
When I’d be falling to the pits from unimaginery heights
If they knew this would happen, that I’d be in pain
Why didn’t they tell me to stay away.

Does he do it on purpose to show he’s a man
Or does he just simply not know that he can
Hurt a person as he has done me
And yet after all this someone else I wouldn’t see
I’d think that I love him and ask myself why
But then I’d remember as he wipes the tear from my eye.
