How Beautiful It Is

Rating: 5.0

How beautiful it is,
how easily it can be broken,
far more them merely phys-
iological once it has woken.
How lovely when it dwells
in hearts resembling the tents
where poets cast their spells
its tales that seem to make no sense
to those who are too timid,
because they fear that they might break
the love that has no limit
before it breaks and starts to ache.

Inspired by the title of Daniel Mendelsohn’s most recent book, How Beautiful It Is and How Easily it Can Be Broken, taken from stage directions of Tennessee Williams’s play The Glass Meangerie. G. W. Bowersock reviews the book in the NYR, November 6,2008.
