How Sweet The NCAA?

White as cotton
in harvest
owners once
whipped
wide bound backs
and glistened skin
to make the cut.

Now, tall and slender
as sugarcane
free
but of agents
The gangs hold court
in absentia
still counted
by baskets
sorted to jump
paid in hope.

Shouts and wagers
as they twist
and hang from nets.
Entertainers!
Sweating, branded
victorious
while waiting
auction
to the Pros.

poet George Gordon Byron

I speak not, I trace not, I breathe not thy name;
There is grief in the sound, there is guilt in the fame;
But the tear that now burns on my cheek may impart
