I Am Not I Poem by Juan Ramón Jiménez

I Am Not I

Rating: 3.3

I am not I.
I am this one
walking beside me whom I do not see,
whom at times I manage to visit,
and whom at other times I forget;
the one who remains silent while I talk,
the one who forgives, sweet, when I hate,
the one who takes a walk when I am indoors,
the one who will remain standing when I die.

The better me; the soul; the shadow. Not clear what's being alluded to except that sense of other as we dissociate in the everyday. My favourite word is the 'sweet', which is ambiguous but connects by changing pace and tone to the reader, lover, or child. 'This one' is also nice, giving a pointedness, visibility and immediacy to the idea of permanence. Maybe you could have worked that harder?
