I Am Safe Poem by Eugene Mattingly

I Am Safe

How do I know what's real and
what pretends to be real;
where does the answer lie,
and how often does it excite
a smile upon my face
when for a fleeting moment
I am witness to the light.

Neither you nor I can record
these moments yet they last
forever and can be recalled
even in the night season
when darkness prevails
My heart flutters at the sound
of your approaching steps.

My joy is full my heart content
just to know your are near and
come what may no matter what
I am safe within the boundary of your mind.
