I Cannot Say Much Of Anything Poem by Shalom Freedman

I Cannot Say Much Of Anything

I cannot say much of anything-
The weight is too heavy to lift-
The hill is too high to walk up-
Everything is more difficult now-
And I bring with it the grief
For so many no longer here.

Yet I am still here-
And will step by step go on
As best and as long as I can-

The road has been long-
It is still before me
Though it does not stretch out into the distance
As it once did-

I walk on slowly
And I look ahead
So as not to fall
But often in my thought
It is not the road ahead
But the one behind
I still walk on.
