I Do Not Respond Poem by Rebekah Gamble

I Do Not Respond

The people live in eternal night,
so when the sun goes to bed,
they don't always realize that it is dark.
The streetlight is lonely tonight.
He holds off the weight of the darkness,
and pushes his light against the weight of silence.
The silence penetrates all, sinks into the rocks,
and sounds out from inside the trumpet blooms.
The streetlight is sad, because people are light creatures,
and yet, he has to call out to them:
'Come to me for light. You don't have to be afraid,
or live in darkness anymore.
Come to the light. Take comfort and become human again.'
But the people stay
barred up in their dark houses.
His light echoes in my window
and fades to a muggy smear.
Even I do not respond.
