I Do Not Speak Poem by Stevie Smith

I Do Not Speak

Rating: 3.7

I do not ask for mercy for understanding for peace
And in these heavy days I do not ask for release
I do not ask that suffering shall cease.

I do not pray to God to let me die
To give an ear attentive to my cry
To pause in his marching and not hurry by.

I do not ask for anything I do not speak
I do not question and I do not seek
I used to in the day when I was weak.

Now I am strong and lapped in sorrow
As in a coat of magic mail and borrow
From Time today and care not for tomorrow.

It's about acceptance through experience; going beyond a simplistic faith; understanding that the answer to the life question 'is that all there is? ', sadly, is 'yes'.

I like this piece. It feels as if she's saying this is life, there's good days and bad days, no use crying and agonizing over what's not, tomorrow brings a new day and life trudges on!

I love this poem, my interpretation is that even though we go through struggles in life there is a meaning to it.We have ups and downs in life to make us a stronger person, and that its all in our hands on how we handle things. To now live life to the fullest and not care for tomorrow because its tim will come. I LOVE this poem so much i even cramed it! !
