(Original in Punjabi by Bulle Shah, the Sufi Mystic)
'Bullaa, kee jaanaa main kaun'
Bulla, I don't know who I am
I am no worshipper in a mosque,
I don't walk the ritual path;
No pure I am to impure sent,
Nor from Moses or Pharoah, I descend;
Bulla, I don't know who I am
Not in holy books, in opium or wine
Not in sleep nor intoxication of the mind
Bulla, I don't know who I am
Neither I am glad
Nor I am sad;
I am not found in water or land,
Neither in the fire nor in the air
Bulla, I don't know who I am
I am not an Arab, nor of Lahore
Neither from Hind, nor from Nagore,
Neither a Turk, nor a Pathan,
Nor to Nadaun do I belong
Bulla, I do't know who I am
No religion I know, no Adam or Eve,
I am not the name by which I am called
Neither I move on, nor I am stalled
Bulla, I don't know who I am
I am the beginning and I am the end
None other I have known as a friend
Among the wisest, I am alone
Bulla, to myself I am unknown
Bulla, I well know who I am
