I got an envelope today

I got an envelope today -
thumb prints familiar on one side
and the other had my scribbled name

From -'Who lit your lamps
and shared morning bread'

Unwatched, I opened it wide
for a leaf -
of four words, a distant smile
and seasoned faith.
With hands caressed, I said-
'This is the least I need',
smiled and walked away.
For this unlettered soul
but could not read;
I got her letter today

Poem of the Day

poet Henry David Thoreau

My books I'd fain cast off, I cannot read,
'Twixt every page my thoughts go stray at large
Down in the meadow, where is richer feed,
And will not mind to hit their proper targe.
