I Hope That It Won'T Be Today Poem by Francis Duggan

I Hope That It Won'T Be Today

Last night it was raining and stormy this morning the cold skies are gray
But I'll live till the reaper will claim me and I hope that it won't be today
For I'd hate to die in wet weather when the rain is bucketing down
And the river has spilled over it's banks and flooded the streets of the Town
And when the reaper comes to claim me I hope it will be in the Spring
On a day of beautiful sunshine when birds in the Parkland do sing
On a nice day to return to Nature and in her cool bosom to lay
The clock on our lives it is ticking and ticking and ticking away,
I can hear a funeral bell ringing a similar bell will ring for me
To tell all who do care to pay heed of our fragile mortality
The billionaire, monarch and pauper must answer to the reaper's call
We bloom like the flowers of the Summer and die like the leaves of the Fall
And as for me I hope the reaper claims me when the swallows chirp as they fly
And the skylark with a lust for living is carolling in the sunny sky.
