I’m Dreaming Of A White Easter Poem by C Richard Miles

I’m Dreaming Of A White Easter

I’m dreaming of a white Easter,
Just like the ones we soon will feel
Now that global warming
Has given us warning
That climate change is now for real.
I’m dreaming of a white Easter
Now nature’s come and dealt a fright
Armageddon beckons
And boffins reckon
That all our Easters may be white.

I’m dreaming of a stark future
When ozone layers start to thin.
What with sunbeams scorching
Just like blowtorching
We’ll end up with fried and frazzled skin.
I’m dreaming of a stark future
When we’ll have all forgotten snow.
There’ll be mass extinctions
As we fail to shrink sun’s
Rays, on all God’s creatures here below.

I’m dreaming of destroyed rainforests
And of a world devoid of trees
When the world’s great powers
All ignore rare flowers
And don’t care for monkeys, birds and bees.
I’m dreaming of destroyed rainforests
As over-logging starts to bite
It isn’t too clever:
They’ll be gone for ever
But we brush these worries out of sight.

I’m dreaming of each fresh health warning
As we pursue unchallenged greed.
What with overeating,
We’ll soon be meeting
Demands our dwindling fields can’t feed.
I’m dreaming of each fresh health warning
And it will be a sorry tale
As we give our nation
Too much medication
And the antibiotics start to fail.

I’m dreaming of the dire destruction
Of countries scarred by acid rain
As the forests splinter
And a nuclear winter
Could threaten life on earth again.
I’m dreaming of the dire destruction
Of countryside so green and grand
As those plastic mountains
Overrun like fountains
As growing landfill sites expand.

Let’s dream of a new, green solution
So we ensure our planet heals.
Let us try recycling
And commute by cycling:
We don’t need petrol-driven wheels.
Let’s try to relegate pollution
Into history’s fading books.
If we really plan it
We shall save our planet
And the future’s brighter than it looks.
