'I'm Sorry' Poem by NiQi Deveaux

'I'm Sorry'

Rating: 5.0

In your eyes I saw the lust
I shook inside to scatter the dust
That laid on my heart to help me not to see

So I played guitar til my fingers bled
One day we curled up on the bed
It's been said that music soothes the savage beast

My demons were bared and I did not expect
That the dreamer in me would've cried and wept
As I turned my back on a truly lavish feast

Our conversation bout life and love
The pits of hell and heaven above
Were heavy... But feather light to the touch

Nothing serious here, just a chance at forever
You express to me how you love I'm so clever
But I'm a little less than the woman that you see

Cause clever don't matter when your fooling yourself
And putting your heart up on the highest shelf
It's not a 'break it, you bought it' kind of thing

As I stare so deeply in your eyes
The guard is woken, my soul briefly cries
The bell's been rung and the army is bearing arms

Cause I've waged a war a time or two
Tween my heart and my mind but I made it through
Of nine lives... I've only really got one left

Before I had so much to lose
I never noticed how I'd been sorely bruised
Until I noticed that I could even bleed

So much is at stake with my last life left
I'm carefully counting each bated breath
I'm not a gambler anymore, but, ah, there's the rub

To play it safe or risk it all
Count my blessings and leave or let myself fall
What will catch me? Your net or a paven street?

I can see you stand with your arms outstretched
You're braced and I'm teetering on a ledge
My heart says jump, but my head says not again

The army's heartbeats thump as one
A million warriors breathe and I come undone
It's insanity! We all know the searing cost

As the dreamer barters with the fool
They play it calm and they play it cool
Move a hair... swords and shields are quickly drawn

They'll take me down a peg or two
They slumbered once cause I said I knew
But I didn't and their numbers have been thinned

So day by day they shift their watch
Wasting away and dig a new notch
On their belts and you know they're keeping tabs

Their tension is strong, to this day unmatched,
I've no idea even, how to cause a scratch
They're heavy armour's barely got a dent

(Additon)

Now time has passed the game plan set
Seeing all the while there was no threat
But an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Their energy is not wasted but
They're still ready to strike the deepest cut
That will certainly cause a slow and painful death

They're not finished yet and through tough eyes
Keeping their vigil through the long dark night
But peace will surely bring them all to rest

Guarding the heart that is their host
They work to make sure that a ghost
Is not something they'll have battle to protect

Cause it's a losing one when it goes that far
Might as well try and travel to the farthest star
Cause that would surely be easier to achieve

So far now they sit by fires and feast
Music has soothed the savage beast
And soon they will slumber once again

Praying with every ounce if their heart
That the end has really begun to start
So that they can drop their heavy swords and sheilds

To be feathery light and return back home
Cause they've been gone so very long
But it's a joyfully long journey they long for

Though exausted they will muster up
Millions of feet stomping home will stir the dust
And the carnage will be drowned by sighs of relief
