Joba Akinola

I Must Fly - Poem by Joba Akinola

I am trapped and bound
Shackled and chained to the ground
I am locked shut in this dark dungeon
Buried in this gaol, all alone

I am starved of life and light
Deprived of music and love at night
All looks hopeless and bleak
Devoid of the joy I seek

My soul longs to flee
My heart yearns to fly
Oh! If I could like a bird fly
I’d break away with utmost glee

My fetters snicker and sneer
The jailers laugh and jeer
I feel like The Man in the Iron Mask
Like new wine in an ancient cask

I must make my escape from here
Where to, I do not know
I have no fellows awaiting me anywhere
But I’m convinced that I must go.
