I Promise Poem by Ayandare Mayowa

I Promise

I promise, I will always be there,
I promise, regardless, I will be fair,
I promise, will never withhold my care,
I promise, you will always be my dear,
I promise, you have nothing to fear,
I promise, you will never lack,
I promise, never will I make you cry,
I promise, you, I will never nag,
I promise to love, cherish and honour you,
I promise, you shall not die.

Deadlines, sorry I was not there with you at the twins birth,
You were arguing with my mum, it was almost impossible to be balanced or fair,
Sorry I forgot your birthday and our anniversary date, you’re still my dear,
Promised you my unfailing care, then the twins and my dream car came along,
Insensitive, even foolishly nicknamed the slick car ‘My love’,
I promised never to make you cry, hope that water in your face did not come from your eyes,
Promised laughter will be your only medicine, isn’t that drip on your left hand,
I promised you will never lack, never knew business could be this bad,
Said you have nothing to fear, but I am myself a man of many fears,
Promised I will never nag, never envisaged all these pressures,
I promised you’ Happy ever after, ’ I’m sorry I made you sad a month later.
I promised a lot, yes I did,
Funny, I even promised we will never die,
Seeing death is appointed to all men,
Truth be told, if God wills it, can I contend with Him?
Dust mixed with water became being by a borrowed breath;
That is what I am,
Seeing I am but ordinary mortal,
What can I promise?
But this I solemnly swear and promise,
I promise to be the best of my ‘fallen self' per time,
Yes, I promise, so help me God.
