I Promise Poem by Linda Barnes

I Promise

The day you left Mom
I promised I would stay
But God had other plans it seems
A mistake, I would pray

You come to me in my dreams
I have always wondered why
Did you come to release me
From the promise I had vowed

I miss you every day Mom
My heart still asks why
My promise to you was broken
Of sharing a final goodbye

My tears come softly now
More quiet and restrained
As I hold you close in my heart
My promise to you remains

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Written on 1/26/15 and is about making a promise to my Mother who was terminal and when I admitted her into the hospital for her final days I promised her I would stay with her until the end. After 5 days and 4 nights, I left her surrounded by other family members to go home and get some rest. She died one hour later.
