I Saw Some Refugees That Were Fleeing (Rondel) Poem by Gert Strydom

I Saw Some Refugees That Were Fleeing (Rondel)

I saw some refugees that were fleeing,
many leaving their rural homes in fright,
running away during the day and night,
and as a soldier I was not sight-seeing,

was sick of killing and war into my being,
and those poor rural people were a sight.
I saw some refugees that were fleeing,
many leaving their rural homes in fright,

I had not opportunity to be disagreeing
had to hold my weapon firm and tight
had no chance to think about wrong and right,
was in war trying to be still existing,
I saw some refugees that were fleeing.
