I Should Have Taken The Rose Poem by Rita Shay

I Should Have Taken The Rose

In the famous movie somewhere in time,
The female lead, Elise one day breaks character on stage
Professing that the ideal man she has created in her mind is
' nearly faded now' because she has found the true, real love of her life,
Something even better than anything she has pictured in her day dreams.

Well the man of my dreams, is a man that I love, but not in a boyfriend girlfriend way.
The man of my dreams is one whom I admire and respect.
Who told me to make my life extra-orindary and I have tried,
And failed ever since.
Then he left.
Forever imprinting ' nothing gold can stay' on my heartstrings
And he is nearly faded now
No matter how I try to stop, I compare every other man to him.
They all seem to foolish compared to him and I feel foolish for spending time with them.
And this problem was never his intent, no he brought me a rose
But I was afraid of the thorns sitting all around the side.
So I watched him hold the rose, again and again holding it out for me to touch.
But I never did.
And now I imagine its touch
And dream of touching his arm and saying I am ready now.
And feeling the velvet delicacy of the red and feeling the venom of the thorn.
But I can't spin back the clock,
I wonder if fading memories are a sign of acceptence
Or simply letting go of something you should have held on tight to.
