I Stood Upon A Hill Poem by Thomas Noel Smith

I Stood Upon A Hill

Once I stood upon a hill
And looked at the town below
My heart asked “Where are you bound? ”
Replied my soul, “I do not know.”

The work of the heart is never done
From morning until night
Searching for wisdom that makes it whole
Reaching for eternal light

The endless quest that drives the soul
Down a road it does not know
Leaving friends that I once knew…
Into a strange new land I go.

To stand upon a lonely hill
And see the town below
And answer the question of the heart
With the simple words, “I don’t know.”
