I Thought I Was Loved Poem by Anderson Greenwald

I Thought I Was Loved

I once had a true best friend
Someone to know and to defend
He left and said, “You knew this would end.”
I thought I was loved.

I had a wife and some things to lose
I never thought I’d have to choose
But it didn’t matter; she left with a noose.
I thought I was loved.

I had my kid who stayed with me then
“But just like you, ” she said, “I have a friend.”
As I looked around, I saw it’s pretend;
I thought I was loved.

It was twenty nine years before I could tell
If I’m going to heaven or going to hell
And with the clearest diction, I couldn’t help but yell
I thought I was loved.

You answered the question before I could ask
“Is there enough glory in You, so I could bask? ”
You said, “I’m sorry; it’s just too hard a task.”
I thought I was loved.

I can’t quite tell what kind of life I lead
‘Cause I have no purpose; no use; no need
If life is a garden, then mine's just a weed.
I thought I was loved.
