I'Ve Never Referred Poem by Francis Duggan

I've never referred to myself as a poet
Or as one who should be worthy of literary note
The stuff that I pen I don't try for to sell
I am one of those people who writes doggerel

I've formed an addiction over decades of time
Of the poor habit of penning of doggerel rhyme
But my bond with Nature I feel is quite strong
And like all other life forms to her I belong.

The whistle of a shrike thrush on a sunlit tree
Only serves to alight the addiction in me
The compulsion on paper to pen my thoughts down
An addiction for me that will not lead to renown.

A simple poetaster may best describe me
And on my behalf that's not false humility
For to sell the stuff I pen I don't even try
And the word poet to such as me does not apply.
