I Ventured Into The Woods Poem by Adrienne Gagne

I Ventured Into The Woods

Rating: 3.5

I ventured into the woods to find some clarity
but upon my entrance, I was only met with a sense of prosperity
because beneath the canopy there are no laws and expectations,
that dictate the necessity of a possessive state of mind.

A bush represents much more than just curling branches and fluttering leaves
for in the early months of warmth,
the bush displays a colorful collection of ripe crimson berries.
The fruit may have grown next to the curling branches and fluttering leaves
but the berries benefit the organisms that breathe,
much more than merely remaining in the presence of the other trees
and so, the bush willingly gives up it’s creation.

A chipmunk burrows into a deep hole during the cold season
and without much thought or any reason
he will place acorns in sporadic locations underneath the earth
but the chipmunk forgets the source of his treasure
and disregards his home and food completely.
Other animals find the food and claim it as their own
while using the empty hole to keep their babies warm
and so, the chipmunk willingly gives up his belongings.

I entered the woods to find some clarity
and slowly realized that I can longer carry
a possessive state of mind.
For in these woods I own nothing;
the air is for everyone to breathe
the leaves do not just belong to the trees
and food is meant for anyone with an empty stomach.

Upon my entrance, I am simply met with feelings of prosperity
If no singular organism has rightful ownership to certain resources
then in an essence, we can claim everything
and everything in turn, can claim us.
