I Wrote Poems About Writing Poetry Poem by Shalom Freedman

I Wrote Poems About Writing Poetry

Rating: 5.0

Poems about being or trying to be a poet
Poems about what rejection means
I wrote poems about the love of language
And poems about the love of life
And also Poetry of Fear Worry Despair Sorrow Sadness Pain Loss
I wrote poems about what I knew
And what I most cared about
I wrote them without recognition and without real acceptance
Perhaps they are all nothing
And not real poetry
And I am a delusion a made-up thing real only to myself
Perhaps I am not a poet at all
But only for years someone trying to be a poet and failing
Perhaps this matters so much and perhaps it matters nothing at all
I lived my life in this way
Perhaps that matters
The man who tried to be a poet
And was no poet at all
Yet lived his life as a poet
And wrote his soul and his years away

You write out the silent questions living perhaps in so many of us, certainly also in me. Do I matter, does what I write matter, will it matter in years from here? If i google my poet name and I see someone using a poem of mine on his or her blog or connecting one of my poems to a photo, it gives me some unnamable satisfaction. When a twelve-old had put on youtube a video for her arts project in school with my poem in it, it made feel so good. But quite often the questions you posed here remain. Does it matter, will it matter, or does it matter only to me. Perhaps if it matters to ourselves, that is something quite important already. If we manage to inspire only a few people or even only one, perhaps all we have written will have mattered somehow. It is always a pleasure to recognise one's own feelings in a poem written by someone else. This poem mattered to me! :) Excellent write.
