If All I Am Is Kind (Poverty) Poem by A. P. Hancock

If All I Am Is Kind (Poverty)

Dedicated to All Our Homeless Friends Around the World

I saw my old friend Cal today in the slow fast drive-up line
He was looking for a dollar or two, a dollar or two of mine
He said, “Hey Doc, what’s happenin, where the world you been? ”
That’s when the guard came up to Cal, and put a hand on him

“Come on man, you’re gone, you’re finished, yo-self is outta here”
Cal said, “No, this guy’s my bud, my pal, he’s known me good for years”
And then the guard asked clear and plain, “Is this bum bothering you? ”
Of course I told the officer, “No.” but that wasn’t really true

Cause Calvin bothered me everytime, everytime he passed me by
I was bothered because he had to beg, for a burger, coke and fries
I was bothered because his only clothes, were dirty, old and worn
I was bothered because people just didn’t care, that his soul was also torn

The guard finally took his hands off Cal, and I gave him some coins for the day
He went inside with all the rest to eat, and I went on my way
Back to the mansion with Cal on my heart, and others on my mind
Knowing that this thing will never change, if all I am is kind
