If I Find Poesy Poem by Francis Duggan

If I Find Poesy

If I could only write one worthy rhyme
That well may last beyond my own life time
That one may read and to his friend then say
Now that seems good yes that seems quite okay.

I have a wish that on bright Summer day
Whilst on green bank of whispering creek I lay
That Poesy will come and whisper in my ear
And tell me things that I've longed for years to hear.

And with me she might spend a little time
And show me best how to construct a rhyme
And how a bard with rhyme words ought to play
And from me take those rough edges away.

I've searched for poesy sought her everywhere
And where I've searched I've never seen her there
And although I think I hear her in the wind
She's proved too hard too hard for me to find.

And if I do find poesy I know that she will show
Me things that I've yearned for years and years to know
And she'll tell me how birds know when to nest and sing
And how flowers come to the gardens in the Spring.

And she'll tell me how some animals survive
And in the harshest climate seem to thrive
And some will even say the man's a poet
And I'll be known as one worthy of note.

And if I meet Poesy I might write one rhyme
That well may last beyond my own life time
That one may read and to his friend then say
Now that seems good 'yes' that seems quite okay.
