If You'Re Smiling Now Poem by jim hogg

If You'Re Smiling Now

Well I'm no tongue tied teenage kid
No mid life crisis on the brink
I can't say that I'm innocent
but neither am I cynical

It's hard enough to get it straight
When we've got time to contemplate
But in the mess that living makes
It isn't hard to make mistakes

But that's not good enough this time
With all the licence of hindsight
The fault was mine and you were right
To break away, to draw a line.

chorus
And if you're smiling now my love
Because you've got the life you want
Because you're happy now at last
At last it's true to say I'm glad

The second chances I ignored
There must have been almost a score
Beyond what dignity affords
Until at last you closed the door

And now I'm standing on the bridge
Where we once stood and didn't kiss
Or by the sea on that steep hill
Where I forgot to say "I will".

But all these clichés won't undo
The pain and doubt that I caused you
And all of that I'll always rue
Not just because I still love you

chorus
And if you're smiling now my love
Because you've got the life you want
Because you're happy now at last
At last it's true to say I'm glad
