In A Perfect World There Are Buts Poem by Bianca Haw

In A Perfect World There Are Buts

In a perfect world you are at my side
You show a strength of character unique to you
Your eyes shine, your voice leads me in a senseless glide
and you are never far from my reach
Our love shines brighter, even to my father's eyes

But in this world that's torn apart
Us against them, and them all alone
They cannot show strength as they are the enemy
Stored among us and kept restricted
They live in fear of the prison guards we have have become

In a perfect world no one starves
No one has to steal and no one can commit a crime
The world is safe for all and life is carefree
Food is abundant and doesn't have to be traded for
More importantly, food is food, a prawn is a prawn

But in this world the same cannot be said
People steal to stay alive, crimes have become commonplace
The world is no longer safe and they are ever vigilant
Food is scarce and kept for those who can afford it
And the Prawns have become our enemies

In a perfect world, no one would suffer
No one could be classified above or below another
We would all be equal and danger would not exist
Isolation, exile and alienation would be foreign concepts
The Truth would not be hidden

But in this world of Lies and conspiracy
A friend is not defined by his looks
Danger lurks behind every corner
There is no goodness left to our race,
We alienate the aliens who are alone in this new world

In a perfect world Christopher would be our friend
and that secret place beneath his shack would not exist
The MNU would not be needed
The Prawns would be free and life would adapt
This world would be one of peace and not of men and guns

But in this world of conflict and strife
Christopher is the enemy, his son the bane of aliens
We laugh at their suffering, complain about their instincts
And then one day, the neighbours came with smoke and flame
Why don't we see how strange we are in their eyes?

In a perfect world you would always be my Wikus
You are a hero in my eyes, you are my perfect world
It doesn't matter now, it's over anyhow
I promised never to give up on you, despite their lies
And Wikus? I'm waiting for you..
