In Birdsland Poem by Francis Duggan

In Birdsland

In the high wood at Birdsland the green bellbirds sing
On a sunny day in Winter two weeks from the Spring
Like fairy bells ringing them one cannot mistake
They sing all day long till darkness from daybreak,
In the high wood at Birdsland the magpies in song
They sing all the day and they sing all night long
The males have their breeding borders to defend
And at this time of year they accept none as friend,
On the big lake at Birdsland young water birds out
The young of the moorhen, coot, wood duck and black duck swim about
A beautriful day in a beautiful place
And Nature herself has a smile on her face
In Birdsland in the Yarra Ranges from here far away
In the pleasant sunshine of a nice Winter's day.
