In The Eye Of The Beholder Poem by Jean Renwick

In The Eye Of The Beholder

Can’t stop thinking about you
Maybe I’ll come around to see you.
I know it’s not what you would want
You are talented, beautiful, a confidant.
I know it’s not the right thing
Because I am none of those things
And what I want to, just won’t happen.
Though we move in the same circles,

The same circle won’t contain us both.
It’s wicked but it’s truth.
It’s a miracle you have time for me
I spend too much of mine in dreams.
I’ll see you floating, gliding over there
With everyone around you, it’s (just) not fair.
Our acquaintance may increase with time
But intimacy will be for others to deserve.

Yet I answer to a hidden pull
I stand aside and watch me fall.
I should not wander down this path
Unable, as I am, to deal with the aftermath.
If Fate determines that I resign
There must indeed be another design.
The high I’m flying on is deceiving
Square wheels will take me nowhere.
