In The Night I Wait Poem by Nia Schexnider

In The Night I Wait

Rating: 5.0

In the night I wait,
For slumber to take my eyes,
he will not have me.

I lay on my bed,
seperated from my love,
nightmares only come.

How can I escape?
When will I ever get rest?
Don't leave me, but go.

This is what you need,
Then go and do what you do,
I'll be here waiting.

I don't understand.
How could you just leave like that?
five years, and a week.

It took just one week.
seven days, and forever.
You belong to them.

you are not mine now.
The governments property
not free, not for me.

You chose this for you.
Don't complain, don't say a word.
It's all about you.

Not for the riches,
But, you get to see the world.
I'm proud, good for you.

Military life,
Military strife, and me
Military wife.

I am just here now.
I spend every night alone.
In the night I wait.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is a series of Haikus that I wrote for my Husband. We were together for five or more years since we were 14 and 15. He told me one week, 'I want to join the Army.' He left the next weekend, never even trying to discuss it with me. I wanted to stay with him, I wanted to try and work it out, but once he joined I knew he wanted to make a career out of it. I don't believe in war. I don't believe in fighting for something or someone that you don't know. When he joined, it broke my heart.

How sad. I don't agree with war either - it's all about making money, at the expense of innocent, and gullible young men.

Khairul Ahsan, Thank you for reading this. and commenting. I appreciate it. Sometimes just one comment and one reader can help to alleviate the feeling of not being heard at all. Much appreciated.

While reading this beautiful poem of yours, I was simply amazed! You have so wonderfully painted the pain, insomnia, loneliness, and anxiety of a 'Military Wife'! 'Military life, Military strife, and me Military wife.' - Well said! 'you are not mine now. The governments property not free, not for me.' - A harsh reality. The note is heart touching. 'I don't believe in fighting for something or someone that you don't know. When he joined, it broke my heart.'
